- The South was the region with the highest volume of burglaries, reported 42% of all burglaries committed.

- The Northeast had the least amount of burglaries, reporting 14% of all burglaries committed and the greatest decrease in burglaries, reporting a seven percent drop from 1997.
Burglaries Based by Classification
- 65% of all burglaries were by forcible entry (use of force of any kind to unlawfully enter a structure for the purpose of commiting a theft or felony-entering through the use of tools, breaking windows and forcing doors, windows or locks).
- 28% were by unlawful entry (entry with no force, achieved via an open door or window).
- 7% were reported as an attepted forcible entry (attempt made at forcible entry interrupted when burglar is frightened off).
